UNDERSTANDING GUARDIANSHIP

Attorney Nancy Shue assists individuals and families in understanding guardianship and navigating the court proceedings when guardianship becomes necessary. Guardianship is a legal process used to appoint a decisionmaker when someone is unable to make safe or informed decisions about their personal care, medical needs, or finances and there are no powers of attorney (or there is a problem with the powers of attorney).

  • Assisting clients with understanding when guardianship may be appropriate
  • Assisting clients with understanding when alternatives to guardianship may be appropriate
  • Guidance throughout and following the court hearings

Before attending the conference, please come prepared with the following:

  • Physician’s or Psychologist’s Report (see attachment)
  • Contact information and date-of-birth for person in need of guardianship
  • Contact information for person nominated to serve as guardian
  • Contact information for person nominated to serve as alternate guardian
  • List of benefits received by person in need of guardianship
  • List of assets owned by person in need of guardianship
